Words of Knowledge

Recently I was part of a Christian team working at London Vitality Show – a holistic health and beauty show that contains all sorts of alternative therapies. Some local Christians had organised a tent at the show to speak to and pray for the people who came to the show. Whilst there, a lady came to my table for words of encouragement. I explained that I was Christian and that God wants to speak so I started to bring words of knowledge as they came to mind. Then suddenly I got a nerve pain through my bottom and down my right leg which indicates to me lower back pain / sciatica. I asked if she had lower back pain that moves into your leg to which she replied yes, I said I believe God wants to heal you and prayed for her. She left the table encountering God and the Holy Spirit sending electricity through her body. God touched someone who was not even a Christian but who was looking for direction.

I want to share my journey so far and the lessons learnt in accessing God’s heart for people through prophetic words of knowledge and to encourage you to step up and out in allowing God the Father to encounter people through you. I’ve found that receiving a word of knowledge is simply God revealing his heart and intension for a person(s), church or situation. 1 Corinthians 14:24-25 states “But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever ... enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you”. People are looking for spiritual encounters and as God’s children we carry the privilege of letting the Holy Spirit use us to reveal that the most powerful “Spirit” is available to all people. The increase in the number of accurate words of knowledge brought at the Kings Arms and in the “market place” shows that God is on the move eager to encounter his creation. Moving in the supernatural is our identity as children of a loving Heavenly Father.

Relationship with Jesus - Understanding the Gift of Grace

Paul explains in Ephesians 2:4 “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ - by grace you have been saved”. I was caught up in sexual sin but in the midst of this darkness the Holy Spirit revealed Jesus was alive and had all the power to break off all addictions. God had a greater purpose for my life than the one I was living; to know true love, peace, happiness and live an adventurous life. Paul writes in verse 10 of Ephesians “For we are created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which the Father prepared in advance for us to do”. I did nothing to earn God’s love, with the little faith that I had I just said “take me as I am with all my faults”. Since then God has been changing me and leading me into a life of supernatural adventures. The exciting thing is that the same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in me and as a result I have access all the power in the universe to change situations as God leads. Jesus only ever did what he heard his Father say and this same relationship is available to us if we humble say “Jesus my life is yours”.

Come into line with God’s purpose for your life by asking forgiveness and receiving his love.

Relationship with the Holy Spirit

Having a relationship with the Holy Spirit is fundamental to growing as a Christian who operates everyday in the supernatural. In fact in John 16 verse 7, Jesus says that it is better for us that he goes away so that the Counsellor (Holy Spirit) will come. In subsequent verses Jesus explains that all that the Father has belongs to Jesus and in v15 he says “…That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.” In other words the Holy Spirit brings revelation not only of the Father and Son but also their plans for us and others; importantly we access this through faith. “In him and through faith in we may approach God with freedom and confidence” Eph 3:12.Therefore spending time with the Holy Spirit helps us to build relationship with the Father, Jesus and the person of the Holy Spirit. This is essential to asking and hearing words of knowledge for yourself and others.

  • Set some time aside (15min, 30min, 60min) and in stillness ask the Holy Spirit reveal his plans for you. Prayers like:
  1. Talk to me Father about…… (name the situation that you would like help with)
  2. Father can I have a scripture to mediate on that reflects my life now
  3. Father can you show me what its like to be your child
  4. Holy Spirit I don’t know how I feel and what to pray but in confidence I will wait on you because you know me better than I know myself

Living a Lifestyle that is pleasing to the Father

In Matt 5, verse 8 says “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God”. Once I had received the love of God as my Father I wanted to live my life to honour what he had done for me. Some key practical interventions that I made were to commit to small group community, have open level of accountability with guys and spend one evening a week with God. During the safe setting of small group I was encouraged to listen for the voice of God and build faith that he would speak to me and importantly that he wanted to speak to the person in front of me. In this environment I learnt how to make mistakes and also understand that prophetic words are to build up, encourage and lead others closer to God.

  • In the process of accountability I learnt to admit that I am weak and I need help with life’s issues. Openness allowed God to deal with all hidden sin and enabled me to receive more of his love and grace.

Recognising the promptings of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit uses many ways to speak to us, through the Bible, our circumstances, dreams, visions, impressions and pictures to name but a few. Rather than go into each method I would like to focus on the one through which God particularly speaks to through me:

In Jack Deere’s book “surprised by the voice of God” impressions are described as “the Holy Spirit’s influence on our feelings, our physical senses and our minds”. It is an inner convection strong or faint about something, hence the need to be still before God.

  • When you receive an impression simply ask God is what I am sensing from you Holy Spirit and if so what would you like to do. Sometimes if things are confusing I ask for clarity or speak in tongues.

The times God has used my feelings dramatically to indicate his desire to encounter people has been at church, one being a person who self harms and the other who had a spirit of suicide. I went to the back of church to listen to God for words of knowledge and as I waited on the Holy Spirit a dark sensation came over me which I had not sensed before. I move to the prayer room to engage more with God to which a horrible feeling of darkness and a pain through my stomach overwhelmed me I can only describe it as utter hopelessness. This triggered in me that people that often feel like this hate themselves and go not value their lives, as soon as I made this connection I was moved with compassion and cried out for God to bring freedom. Each time I have brought this word people have responded and encountered God.

God can use the physical senses of smell, hearing, touch, taste and eyeing to show you what he is or wants to do. In my experience having physical sensations is sometimes easier to recognise and is often the Holy Spirit touching or allowing you to feel the injury site of a person he wants to heal. Whilst preparing for Abundance at the night shelter I was asking God for words of knowledge for the guys that would demonstrate his kingdom. I waited in faith and felt a sharp pain in my right side near my hip. I took note of this and after the end of the talk I asked if there was anyone with the pain that I had felt and there was a positive response, the person had fallen into a tree and injured the side. We prayed and the pain went away in Jesus name.

The final impression impacts the mind and often it comes as a thought process or picture. An example of this occurred recently whist partnering with someone praying for back pain to be healed. The gentleman was encountering God and as my friend started to bring his prayer to a close the thought arthritis came to mind which then led us to pray specifically for this. The gentleman could move with greater freedom and we wait to hear of his total healing.

Prophetic Evangelism

In John 4:16-42 the story of the Samaritan women Jesus encounters a woman going about her daily life and speaks prophetically into her life verses 16-18 Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true." As a result of this the woman goes and tells the whole town of what Jesus has done and in v39 many believed. What an awesome story of one encounter with Jesus changing the lives of a whole town demonstrating the Kingdom Of God on the street.

By living supernatural lives we get to do the same as Jesus did and I want to finish with a detailed case study of how God has used me to minister outside the church and to encourage you all to join the Kings Arms on its mission to encounter Bedford with the love and power of the risen Jesus.

Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give you a heart for those who are not Christians and boldness to approach people.

I sat down for a meal with a group of friend and during busyness of ordering food I sensed the Holy Spirit’s faint conviction. During the meal I stilled myself I asked God to increase what he was doing, I sensed that he wanted to speak into the life one of the waiters. The only impression I had was the word “Accident” and so I pressed into God asking him what about “Accident” and was I hearing him correctly. Previously at the Kings Arms Night Shelter I had a similar word for a guy about a motor bike accident and as I thought about this I started to link the two cases: I rationalised that the waiter had a bike accident. Note: I have learned not to rationalise the impressions of God because he sees into the spiritual realm and we try and use our eyes to look for physical clues. Learning from the experience at this point I would be asking God for more clarity and be happy with just the word “accident”.

Moving on I then God asked which waiter is this word for which was followed by a greater sense of conviction as the correct one entered the room. Then the greatest test of faith followed, how do I engage with this waiter and communicate what I think God is saying. So I said I hope you don’t mind me asking but have you been in a bike accident or does accident mean anything to you. He said that he was interested in what I had to say and so I moved him to a quieter area. I explained that I was a Christian and I believed that God speaks to day and that Jesus had showed me that “accident” was significant in his life. He subsequently admitted that he had nearly died from a number of accidents including one in which he walked away from a car that rolled 5 times. I said that wow there must be someone looking out for you to which he replied yes he believed in a “spiritual friend” that looked after him. He further explained that he didn’t believe in God he just mixed up Buddhism and other religions. Simon Holley who by this time was standing next to me asked a very significant but very simple question, why can’t you call your “friend” God to which he replied, he had not been brought up with knowledge of God and so made up his own mind. Well I explained the reason that I was given this specific word for him was because Jesus loved him and wanted him to know the truth about his protection. I asked him for his name and asked if I could pray a blessing over him that he may know the truth about Jesus and he accepted. We put him in contact with a local church to which he seemed interested.

The great thing is that I did not get this impression completely right but God had a divine purpose for this gentleman and used me to help bring about this encounter. My desire now is to move deeper into God, trust his impressions and ask him for the wisdom of how to deliver words of knowledge to those that don’t know him.

I hope you have found reading this article encouraging and challenging. I encourage you to join me on this journey of seeing God impact people's lives wherever we go. I am working on follow-up for this article – watch this space!
